Just a quick post to say back safe and sound from the Black Mountains. I took my kids with me to stay at the Bothy at Grwyne Fawr Reservoir over the weekend. We had a grand time. The weather was cold but the sun was shining (this october is turning into an outdoor classic month) and we had fun walking to and from the bothy. Of course the main event was actually staying in the bothy. Once I had got the fire going, everyone was toasty inside and the kids loved the 1st floor sleeping area. It was a real family treat and the kids absolutely loved it, even the nightime toilet visit 🙂 We were also treated to a beautiful sunrise not unlike the one I included in my previous Bivvy/Bothy post recently. They even had rucksacks to help their dad carry the load in and out 🙂
I hope my kids will fondly remember this weekend when they are older. They certainly were animated and keen to repeat the outing again sometime. They especially liked the reservoir and the fact that on the way in on Saturday that they were just amongst the clouds (around 600m up). Hardly a word of resistance was heard all weekend. Maybe next year I will take them to a big bothy in the Lakes as well.
All in all, it was a grand bothy-tastic weekend
Sounds like you had a nice trip! In my experience if the kids would like to do it again it was a good trip. Looking forward to hearing more.
thanks Maria,
they even said they would do a proper wildcamp next year too 😀
I used to love my kids coming with me on wild camps. 17 and 14 now and generally not so interested. I think they would still go with me as long as they didn’t have to get up in the morning 🙂
Mark
Hi Mark,
Its not so much the getting up in the morning for my kids its the carrying of stuff….well my lad anyway. My daughter is a trooper and never complains when out and about 🙂
Good to hear that they enjoyed it. Did you get the bothy to yourself? A write up soon I hope!
Well, yes the above is a bit of a write up but I’ll see if I can expand upon it sometime. As to having the bothy to ourselves….yes and no
We arrived on saturday at teatime, unpacked everything, started the fire etc and then a couple came in and said that they had been there earlier and were returning to stay the night. Naturally I offered them to stay but they didnt want to and left…. 😦
Still perhaps spending the night with 2 kids would have been a bit much for anyone 🙂
Fantastic. I hope when my daughter is older we can go on many trips like this.
Hi Simon. I have always taken my kids camping since they were teeny toddlers but now they are just getting into going further and roughing it a bit more.
I just hope they continue to love doing stuff like this with me…at least until the hormones kick in anyway! 🙂
