This weekend saw a fabulous mixture of sun, little wind and mild temperatures…perfect conditions for walking with the added bonus of it being ideal for Barney’s first outing.
Because the weather was so good, we decided to go out to the Brecon Beacons for the day and take the pup with us. We decided on a mixture of town walking along with fields and gentle hillsides. Only 3 or 4 miles over the course of the day but this was required to ensure Barney had a good experience and not exhausted. We wandered through both Crickhowell and Brecon as well as ambling in the adjoining countryside. Nothing too strenuous but then the object was to get Barney used to the car, being out for most of the day and socialisation.
The day was a great success with Barney walking very well in busy places and most of all putting up with lots of noise, attention and other dogs. In Brecon we came across a family with a St Bernard puppy. The St Bernard was 9 months old but was already huge and apparently set to grow much bigger! His owners were St Bernard breeders and declared that he was the runt of the litter and they decided to keep him. To say that Barney was dwarfed is an understatement as you can probably guess from the photo 🙂
Whilst in Brecon we had a good mooch in several outdoor shops and were pleased to note that we were beckoned in to all of them with Barney in toe. Obviously cafes are an issue if you have a dog but it was really nice to see several shops having an open policy with regards to dogs. Whilst in Crickhowell Adventure, I spied a Mountain Paws Hotdog water bowl in small. I’ve been looking to get one of these ever since we got Barney so this was a bonus. The bowl is made from washable polyester and collapses down to a flat disc. Its a little gem of a bit of kit and will get used extensively in the future.
During the day I also had chance to try out a new Berghaus rucksack ,the Freeflow 20, as a daysack. I will give this a write up soon but suffice to say that I found it a really nice pack all-round as well as being the first Berghaus pack I have owned since my Arete 45. Anyway more on that on a future post.
Anyway, this weekends exploits have given me confidence to try Barney out on a proper (but easily accessible) hill next weekend and I can hardly wait!
